We approached the Cincinnati Recreation Commission (CRC) with an ambitious proposal to repave and paint a mural on the basketball courts in ‘Tha Village,’ a public housing area in the West End community. This project was deeply personal for co-founder Adrienne Gaither, who grew up and has family ties within the neighborhood. Our goal was to honor the area’s rich history and create a safe space for community members to hang out and work on their game.

Our collaboration was rooted in community engagement and cultural respect. From the outset, we relied on active participation from the West End community. We conducted surveys to assess interest in the court renovation, collaborated with residents on selecting the mural design, and prioritized hiring local talent for various aspects of the project. Community members also helped spread the word, making the project feel truly collective.

In partnership with Project Backboard and with support from NBA2K, we brought the vision to life, transforming the courts into a vibrant and dynamic space featuring Adrienne’s artwork. The mural celebrated the neighborhood’s cultural heritage, and we organized a block party complete with a DJ, local food trucks, and giveaways like posters, T-shirts, and socks, turning the event into a joyful celebration.

Our Process & Production

The renovated courts revitalized the area, becoming a hub for fall and summer basketball leagues. This initiative not only enhanced the physical space but also strengthened community ties, honoring 'Tha Village’s' legacy and providing a place for residents to connect, celebrate, and take pride in their neighborhood.
